Nightingale Suites has not had any residents or staff test positive for COVID-19, two residents were tested in March and one employee in May all came back negative. Facetime and window visits were extremely busy over Mother’s Day weekend. We want to continue to protect your loved ones therefore need to still restrict the face to face visits. As you know this virus spreads silently and most who are infected are not symptomatic. The incubation period varies possibly taking up to 14 days to develop symptoms.

With the above information in mind we have developed a procedure for residents to return to our community after an outside visit. We do discourage taking your loved ones out, we are still assisting with shopping and getting supplies for residents to discourage trips to the store.

We have implemented a procedure for when residents must go out. This is to help maintain the safety and minimize any possible exposure in our community. When a resident needs to go out we provide them with a surgical mask and gloves, upon return they will complete the screening everyone who enters the building goes through. At the entry way we will replace the surgical mask and remove gloves, assist with providing sanitizer for their hands, disinfect any items they are bringing into the building (ex. Walker, wheelchair, purses, etc.) . Immediately after returning to the building we will assist with a shower including hair washing, and removal and laundering of clothing. Lastly, we will ask that they quarantine in their apartment for the next fourteen days with close monitoring from staff for any signs or symptoms of illness.

We are continuing to follow all CDPHE and CDC recommendations and regulations. We thank everyone for your continued support and understanding during this time.

Thank you,

Kelli Mosely

MAY 6, 2020

Dear Families and Friends of Nightingale Lane,

This is a very difficult time for us, we are deeply saddened with the losses we have experienced. We have decades of caregiving experience and this is the most devastating time we have ever encountered. We love our residents and their families and are walking this journey with you. What we have gone through over the last few weeks has been heartbreaking. Each resident has meant the world to us and we have felt helpless. With CDC and state guidelines all followed, personal protection equipment worn, handwashing, and all protocols followed, to see this virus silently spread through our building has been traumatic.

We are continuing our current staffing numbers as we want to ensure that we are engaging our residents and providing more one on one care, especially during these trying times. Our resident assistants are offering one on one activities and valuable time spent with your loved ones.

After speaking with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, we have been told that Nightingale Lane will be consideredCOVID FREE on May 14th.

We are continuing to not accept any new residents as our focus is on spending quality time with your loved ones and healing as a team.

Thank you for your continued support, it means the world to us.

The Team at Nightingale Lane Memory Care

Nightingale Suites is continuing to adjust. We have not had any COVID-19 positive residents or staff. Our more stylish residents are now using their masks as fashion accessories! We do have our iPad up and running for virtual visits as well as our window visits. Please schedule both through our front desk. During these difficult times we are fortunate to spend the day with residents that can see the lighter side of things. They have taught us about the dust bowl, and stories they have been told about the Spanish Flu, both being similar to the time we are all in with the need to wear masks whenever encountering others. Our patio and backyard areas are getting a lot of use on the warmer days with residents enjoying the sunshine.

Our person centered care is paying off, we are making some adjustments for residents needing a little extra motivation to get up and around. One on one visits with staff to help them maintain their strength until we find the new normal in our community. We miss seeing out visitors and resident families and are hoping and praying a treatment and vaccine will be made soon.

Updated from our Executive Director:

APRIL 23, 2020

I wanted to take a moment and give an update on the residents and staff of Nightingale Lane and how we are handling the current situation in our community. The staff at Nightingale Lane are working diligently to ensure the safety of all of our residents. As the Director of Memory Care I can genuinely say that I have been blessed with an extraordinary team to work alongside. I have never worked with a team so dedicated to the wellbeing of our residents and their families.

I would like to start by explaining the safety precautions that we are currently taking as a community. All staff are being divided into a COVID-19 positive team and a COVID-19 negative team. Each neighborhood will have a staff member from each team so that we can continue to provide the great care that Nightingale Lane is known for. By dividing staff into these two teams we are still providing two staff members per neighborhood every shift, with the exception of our overnight shift. Overnight shift will continue to have two staff members. The COVID-19 positive team is equipped and trained specifically for any residents experiencing symptoms The COVID-19 negative team is providing care to all our residents not experiencing symptoms.

During this time, we have unfortunately but understandably had to cease all activities and communal dining. All meals are being provided to our residents in their apartments. Mealtimes and quality of the food being served has not changed. We are serving all meals with disposable plates and flatware. The reason for this is to prevent any cross contamination while traveling between the kitchen and apartments. The disposable kitchen items are thrown away before staff exit an apartment. Staff are encouraging residents to participate in individual activities such as coloring, movies, arts and crafts and music while in their apartment.

Many families have been concerned with how to speak with their loved ones. Staff are happy to allow residents to use the phones in our common areas. After every use the phones will be sanitized and cleaned appropriately. We do ask that when you call your loved ones, please speak with your other family members to keep them in the loop as well. We are receiving numerous call a day for some of the same residents. When this happens, it limits how much others can communicate with their loved ones. I would suggest a family group text or email be created. After someone speaks to a loved one send an email or text to update everyone with the information that was shared and then rotate who gets to speak to their loved one on what day. I will also be sending out emails to update everyone at least twice weekly. Also, I know a lot of family members concerned about other residents that they have grown close with. Please keep in mind that Nightingale Lane can ONLY share information concerning your loved one.

On Tuesday, 4/21, I had a video conference call with the State of Colorado Health Department, the Center for Disease Control and an Epidemiologist. During this video call I gave them a tour of our community and walked them through our steps of prevention and all the precautions we are currently taking. All three departments were very impressed with our care and had little to no feedback for Nightingale Lane. They felt we were handling the situation appropriately and gave me numerous helpful links for extra education and tools.

Thank you for all the support you have given us. Please call me with any concerns or questions.

Our activities coordinator, Duncan, is once again bringing his musical talent to our Campus. He is performing in the Springwood courtyard Thursday at 3:00pm and at the Fountains Sunday at 2:00pm in the lobby. We are doing healing hands which consists of a gentle hand massage, and painting and filing nails. Our Springwood Sneakers launched last week with two residents already reaching their first destination of Mile High Stadium! We continue to create and deliver Smile-O-Grams for the residents. We welcome any suggestions!

Nightingale Suites would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support from our resident's loved ones. We thank you for making and donating masks for staff and residents. Because of the generosity we were able to give every employee and resident on campus a reusable mask.

We have not had any positive COVID-19 results for residents or staff and the adjustment of wearing masks indoors is going well. We have not reopened our dining room, but we are looking at ways we can maintain the social distancing and still have activities. With the warmer weather we can possibly go outdoors, this will give us that additional space we need.

I would like to again thank our team at Nightingale Suites for taking such great care of our residents and for keeping up our morale.

April 10, 2020 Update

West Cottage Neighborhood Update:

What a beautiful Monday for a concert in the gazebo! The West Cottage residents enjoyed music and sunshine while sitting on their driveways. A stunning day and beautiful music from Duncan, Activity Coordinator.

Fountains Update:

I am excited to inform you of plans to offer new Manager facilitated activities. All residents will have an opportunity to participate in two activities per week; a morning social activity with a conversational topic, and an afternoon game. These will be done in small groups of three to five residents, and will be scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays. Stay tuned for more! Additionally, I am working on setting up residents with smart phones or tablets with the Nymbl app, so that important balance work can be done in apartments.

Nightingale Suites Update:

Nightingale Suites is doing well. We continue to have no cases of COVID-19 for any residents or staff. We are continuing to adjust to the changes this pandemic has caused. Last week we instituted masks being worn by all residents. We can’t thank everyone enough for the donations of homemade masks. Some residents require essential medical personnel to come in for visits and wearing the masks can provide an added layer of protection.

We are still serving meals in all apartments and will be extending this throughout April or as recommended.

Our activity team is wonderful providing one on one visits in individual apartments. We had the added joy this week with some canine cuddles when our Marketing Director, Jill Ross, brought in her pup, Daisy to visit with residents.

Springwood Campus Update:

We want to thank you for your understanding and for working with us to keep everyone safe and well. As you know, this is a difficult time for residents, families, and employees, and we appreciate everyone's cooperation to help make sure that we continue not to have any COVID-19 cases. We are encouraged to report that presently Springwood has NO known cases of COVID-19.

Nightingale Lane Update:

Our residents are doing fantastic! Still no cases of any virus, no cases of fever, just business as usual. We are getting creative with activities. On Friday, 3/27, we did a fun baking day where we all baked goodies such as banana bread, empanadas and chocolate chip cookies. The residents had a BLAST! While the world is urging social distancing, I’m sure that everyone can understand that concept can be tricky in our community. We are having residents dine in smaller groups and having the care staff help in activities so that we can ensure smaller groups. This virus has changed so much of the world as we know it. However, in Nightingale Lane we have become a time capsule, keeping business as usual and keeping the routine flowing. Please rest assured your loved ones are safe, secure, happy and most importantly healthy. Please enjoy the photos that I have attached. As always, give me a call with any concerns.

Nightingale Suites Assisted Living Update:

Our staff has maintained a high morale and positive attitude for our residents and each other. We are so grateful for our staff! To follow social distancing guidelines we have opened up other areas of our building for dining for smaller group meals. We are still continuing with group activities with five residents and less, and we continuing to come up with creative ways to keep our residents active; socially, physically and mentally. As a safety measure we are wearing masks and have been given homemade ones, made with love, from a family member of one of our residents. Window visits are welcome and encouraged from family and we are also working on setting up Skype to virtually visit with loved ones. At Nightingale Suites we are thankful for your patience and understanding as we navigate this dynamic situation together.

Fountains Update:

A big thank you to those of you who successfully isolated, and kept recent illnesses from spreading at the Fountains! The quarantine was lifted before Monday evening this week, and this is a follow up to my personal conversations with residents about current and upcoming procedures.

Important Information! Please read the following guidelines for current safety measures that are now, or soon to be in place, in order to protect our residents from the COVID-19 virus. The time limit for these protocols are pending until further notice.

PLEASE READ: GUIDELINES

Springwood Apartments Update:

Due to social distancing guidelines, the activities we had planned for this week have been suspended. It was discovered that these small group activities gave many residents a false sense of safety. We are having to make very difficult decisions during a difficult time. The activities department will continue to pass out puzzle packets and provide a selection of exercise equipment, movies, puzzles and books.

March 23, 2020

UPDATE

We are still continuing to follow social distancing protocols for the safety of our residents and staff. With that being said we are going to start to reintroduce some small group activities at our Springwood apartments. With meals being served in apartments we will be utilizing our large Springwood dining room for morning exercise classes and we will be getting creative to bring some engaging fun to all. Please see the link below for the activities planned for the week of March 23rd.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to anyone at Springwood should you have any questions or concerns.

March 16, 2020

To our Springwood Community of Residents, Family and Friends,

The health and safety of our residents and staff remain our top priority. Our goal continues to be to keep the virus out. We are in close contact with our local and state health departments, the CDC and local medical professionals to stay up to date on the information to prevent and manage the spread of the Coronavirus. In all areas of our Campus we have reviewed our infection control plans and emergency communication. We have reinforced to our staff and anyone who is sick to stay home. We are following the same infection prevention procedures used for the flu season; hand washing for a minimum of 20 seconds, if unable to wash hands using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, covering your cough with your arm, and disinfecting.

There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in any building on the Springwood Campus. We want to do what is best for our community to continue to protect our residents and staff. To help avert a potential outbreak the following protocols and proactive measures are in place:

  • Residents are encouraged to stay in their apartments

  • They can leave the building but we encourage it be limited

  • They can go out with their families for outings

  • If they do leave, they will be required to have their temperature taken upon their return

  • Card games and resident visits may continue in apartments, no public gatherings in the billiards room, library, lobby, living room or mezzanine

  • Only health care professional visitors are allowed and only after a questionnaire is answered

  • All Springwood employees, healthcare visitors, and residents are required to have their temperature taken

  • No group meals in the dining room, meals will be boxed and delivered to resident apartments until further notice

  • All group activities are suspended until further notice

  • All outings and shopping trips are suspended until further notice

  • For deliveries from family to residents, a staff member will meet the visitor in the outside foyer and deliver to the resident

  • The locks have been changed on all outside doors. Springwood will need to be entered by the front door only

  • Hospital grade disinfectant is routinely used throughout our community

These restrictions may seem excessive; however as you know, there is the possibility of being infected before being symptomatic. There may be exceptions to visiting; for example, if a resident is on hospice. Please contact us for details on how to arrange for visitation.

Unfortunately, this is an unprecedented scenario. Given the pace at which the disease is spreading and the health risks to our resident population, we believe it is vital to exercise significant caution. We realize that these measures might come across as drastic. We are sensitive to the impact on residents, their family members and friends. We encourage anyone to contact us to discuss further if you have concerns.

We know these are challenging times for everyone; we appreciate your cooperation and understanding and supporting our decision to protect our residents.

Pat Gallinger
Executive Director
